The marketplace for reality and semi-scripted television

In 2000, 69 million Americans subscribed to cable television or satellite service. In 2017 this number was reduced to 49 million. As cable subscriptions and television advertising revenue continues to decrease, Internet television has grown and surpassed TV advertising for the first time.

Furthermore, between 2015 and 2016, the number of scripted original television series produced by online streaming services more than doubled from 46 to 93. Today, with over 180 million combined subscribers, Netflix and Amazon have become major players in this global mediascape. (Notwithstanding the recent launch of Disney and Apple TV in late 2019).

Of these scripted series, reality and storytelling television continues to expand audiences. This form of television provides its viewers with a participatory experience, in that the audience becomes emotionally engaged as they watch and identify with the on-screen participants. This engagement occurs as reality television presents good characters that attract people's attention.

America’s Open Roads will go beyond today's automobile, antique, and travel-related television shows such as Rust Valley Restorers, Fast N' Loud, Car Masters, and Garage Squad. In addition, it will differ from television shows about antiques and traveling, such as Antiques Roadshow, American Pickers, Parts Unknown, Samantha Brown's Great Weekends, and The Thirsty Traveler.
